Symbian Experts#1: What are you expectations from Nokia in 2010 ?
Michael Aldridge – Nokiausers.net (@MickyFin)
My expectation for Nokia this year would be that we will see more Ovi Services, and possibly start to see the first handsets in Nokia’s new C Series range.

I’m expecting Nokia to continue to build its software and service orientated strategy. There’s a dual approach here – at the platform level we’ll see Nokia showcasing devices running the next generation of both Symbian and Maemo. While these are separate platform I expect to see an increasing number of common elements including Qt, WRT and
the Ovi service layer. At the service level, which stretches across all Nokia platform, we’ll see the continued evolution of Ovi. I see 2010 to be something of a transition year for Nokia as it builds a lot of the groundwork for future developments. Of course there’ll be plenty of new device and service announcement too – I think the wide
perception will be that Nokia is playing catch up, but this rather ignores the fact that Nokia has the ability to bring such products to more people, in more place, than anyone else.

For 2010, I don’t expect much from Nokia until the end of the year, when Symbian^3 becomes available. I think that’s going to be the first time we really see the results of the shift from Symbian, Inc to Symbian Foundation, and am excited to see what they’ve been able to do. I suppose in the meantime, Nokia will likely release a few boring smartphones with minimal updates. Hopefully, they’ll also continue to focus on their services – they desperately need to work on the Ovi integration with their smartphones, as well as the overall experience on several Ovi services (Ovi Sync comes to mind immediately)

Hmmm that’s a tough question to answer actually. A part of me really wants to see a proper successor to the good ol’ Nokia N82. Maybe a monoblock device with the N86′s awesome Camera, with a Xenon flash (any maybe a single led flash for video taking).
Otherwise I’m thinking Nokia’s probably going to launch another Maemo device, and maybe an Nseries or Eseries device or two along with their budget devices and new Xseries devices. From Nokia’s recent device launches it looks like most flagship devices are going to be all « touch ». Which really makes me wonder about what the new Eseries Flagship might be like.
Apart from that I’m really hoping to see Nokia improve their services. Ovi Share, the Ovi Store, Ovi Sync, they all need work.

As Nokia highlighted last year, they try to push the price point of Symbian powered smartphone to the 100€ line. This is an indeed offensive way to get more market share in the smartphone sector. While Apple is offering only one high costs smartphones, Nokia offer the user a wide range of lower costs smartphones as well as higher costs smartphones. With two mayor operation systems, Maemo and Symbian, they are going to attack Apple and Android this year. Although Nokia has more market share they need to attack both, Android and Apple, as they are increasing their share rapidly.
